Mikey Williams first picked up a basketball before his first birthday and quickly developed a passion for the game under the guidance of his parents, Mahlon and Charisse Williams. His father, a former high school basketball player and coach, and his mother, a former softball player, nurtured his athletic talents.

Williams gained national attention as a freshman at San Ysidro High School in San Diego. In his debut game on November 20, 2019, he scored 46 points, followed by a 50-point performance in his second game. On December 13, 2019, he set a CIF San Diego Section single-game scoring record with 77 points, including nine three-pointers, in a win over Kearny High School. He averaged 29.9 points, 6.7 rebounds, and 4.9 assists per game that season and was named MaxPreps National Freshman of the Year. 

After his freshman year, Williams transferred to Lake Norman Christian School in North Carolina for his sophomore season. He later returned to San Ysidro High School for his senior year, where he averaged 23.8 points, 9.2 assists, and 3.2 rebounds per game.

In November 2022, Williams committed to the University of Memphis. However, he did not play for the Tigers due to legal issues stemming from an April 2023 arrest in California. The charges were later reduced, and he pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor, receiving one year of summary probation. 

In January 2024, Williams transferred to the University of Central Florida (UCF). During the 2024–25 season, he appeared in 18 games, starting five, and averaged 5.1 points and 1.9 rebounds per game. He shot 37.1% from the field and 28.1% from three-point range. 

In March 2025, Williams entered the NCAA transfer portal again and announced his commitment to Sacramento State in April 2025. The Hornets had recently hired former NBA star Mike Bibby as head coach and Hall of Famer Shaquille O'Neal as general manager, signaling a new era for the program.
